Random Thoughts 03.25.06
I dropped a fuji apple in the apartment several days ago, I still can't find it.
They should start off every episode of Nanny 911 with the parents getting slapped up the side of the head by the nanny and being lectured on why they are the reason people should have to pass a basic skills test before reproducing.
The most popular form of televison, reality television, is only popular because people like to validate themselves by seeing people way more f%'d up than they are. I can't believe years after The Real World on MTV (1992), the strategic formula (let's pair up a gay guy with a neo conservative fundamentalist Christian) just came to Fox in the form of Trading Spouces.
Apple fixed my laptop and never told me what exactly was wrong with the laptop despite my guessing it was the hard drive. I get the feeling that if you are willing to pay $350, they will fix whatever is wrong with the computer and ship it back to you.
The guy who sings Your Beautiful is a great big whipped stalker weirdo if you listen to the words.
Beau could use a road trip.
update: The mentioned fuji apple has been found and disposed of.
Which Book to Buy?
So my Laptop died if you haven't heard me bitching about it. It has visited the Genius bar at two different Apple stores three times in two weeks with everything from power issues to hard drive dying issues. It's now on it's way to Houston, TX to get repaired. In the meantime something else has to happen since I need a computer I can travel with and I need it now. I was leaning on getting the Mac Book Pro but I just hate to lose the 2 inches of screen space from my current expectations of 17" screen. I decided in the end to just get a new 17" Powerbook (more Ram and HD, Better Resolution) for several different reasons. Most of them being
- Don't want a smaller screen.
- Intel Chip isn't going to be that advantageous until software upgrades.
- Built in iSight is neat but I already have one.
I am still ancy about calling Apple and changing the order but I think the 17" Powerbook is the right choice. for now. If anyone has compelling arguments to swing me the other way, I am listening.
In a few weeks a refurbished Powerbook 17" will be back here and for sale if anyone is interested before it hits eBay and Craigslist.
Update: According to Apple Insider, and several other sources while investigating, Apple is planning a release of a 17" MacBook Pro by June for the Developer Conference. The only glitch is, since then the (WWDC 2006) has been moved from June to mid August. However, the Insider says Apple should be ready for the 17" release by mid May. Holding up the production has been fitting an 8x superdrive into the very thin MacBook Pro casing. The 15" model currently has a 4x Superdrive 'till mass production of the 8x can be accomplished.
Yesterday I called Apple and canceled my order of the 17" Powerbook and will try and hold out for the 17" MacBook Pro.
Running of the Elephants
So when the circus comes to town it has become a tradition to run the elephants onto Manhattan since there really is no other way to get them here (trains don't come on the island). I met up with some friends the other night and spent a lot of time in the cold to get some picts of this event. When the elephants came running out they went at full speed. I am here to tell you those lil bastards can haul.
I can honestly say it's the closest to being in a riot or mob I have ever come. People were all about running to keep up, PETA was there to protest the treatment of the elephants and cameras were in abundance.
When the big guys came running out I got a few pictures and then my battery died. I filmed a few min of video but really, it's just chasing elephant asses down 34th street.
Yesterday when I tried to get the pictures off my camera memory card, it occurred to me that with my laptop dead and sent off to Apple, I have no way of getting my photos off the camera card.

St. Patty's Day Blue
I was writing a story this morning about how Tom Cruise is an ass for using his power to get South Park's re-airing of "Trapped in the Closet" that makes fun of Scientology and Tom and several other followers, yanked from being shown last night. Isaac Hays has also left the show as the charachter "Chef" due to his connections to Scientology.
Before I could post this however, my laptop locked up and died. The hard Drive is dead and will not boot back up. I will attempt to go to the SoHo Apple store tomorrow but I expect a long wait to be told nothing can be done short of paying as much for a new laptop.
Also, my sister just bought a new Nikon D50 SLR and she is back on my list of people to make pay and suffer. She is an enemy of the state of absolutwade and must pay.
Anyway, go watch the episode of South Park "Trapped in the Closet" over here. If you don't, then Tom Cruise wins.
NYC Flickr Podcast
My friend Kara was spotlighted on a recent podcast for the NYC flickr group (listen). She sounds very professional and I was surprised at the quality in the production of the making of this podcast, really well done. Thanks for the mention in the interview Kara :) I feel vicariously famous.
Walkabout again soon, it's been too long.
Bill O'Reilly has Lost his Mind
Florida school teacher calls into Fox personality Bill O'Reilly and is cut off after mentioning Keith Olbermann's name. O'Reilly then states that Fox security will be tracking those people down and making vague threats to prosecute them. Keith Olbermann covers the story in the video via crooksandliars.com.
...we address the notion if the caller was doing something illegal or something constituting harassment and in fact, he was not. We explored the possibility that when Fox Security calls callers that that itself could amount to harassment, and it might.
tired
I really needed this time to recharge. I really needed this time to get maximum exposure to my son. I'm having a very bad day brought on by a really bad past few weeks. My humor has been sucked dry and I am tired of being sick. I am tired of being silent. I am tired of not being in control of some things around me I need to take control of.
This is me, quietly venting my frustration, anger, and hurt. Tomorrow I will deal with it.
South Dakota; America's Other Slow Kid
So, let me get this straight; everytime I listen to the diatribe coming out of the conservative agenda, I get to listen to how judicial activism by liberal judges is bad for the country, but at the same time, will support state legislation from South Dakota that would openly defy a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court landmark decision?
Here's some needed review* for the legal councel of South Dakota over The Supremacy Clause and Federal Preemption:
THE SUPREMACY CLAUSE Article. VI. This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. State courts are bound then to give effect to federal law when it is applicable and to disregard state law when there is a conflict; federal law includes, of course, not only the Constitution and congressional enactments and treaties but as well the interpretations of their meanings by the United States Supreme Court.
I take new comfort in the fact that most of America can't find you on a map anyway.
* sarcasm implied, It is apparent that South Dakota is attempting to force the matter before the Supreme Court now that the recent appointment of conservative justices Roberts and Alito have made the Supreme Court more likely to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Drinking with Bob on Flickr
Yes, I know it's just the same guy screaming into the camera but some of these are hilarious to read.
The Oscars
I missed my [adult swim] line up for this? I don't even like Joaquin Phoenix nor did I see the movie Walk the Line but he clearly should have won over Philip Seymour Hoffman. And so help me if they vote for Broke Back Mountain over Crash for best picture, I may throw a shoe at the television.
Wayfaring Maps
I used to go to a lot of trouble to make custom maps of my travels; to make them easy to read but accurate as well and give some point of reference to where I took my photos. For what I can only suspect is an attempt to mock me and make all that work useless, wayfaring.com made (yet another) great use for the Google Maps api.
map of my australian travels | my personal map of new york | A useless map of those fun places I grew up in Oklahoma.
* I am now reserving judgement to as to the coolness of wayfaring if they don't get their act together and fix the many bugs as well as improve the crappy navigation. Idea is cool but implimentation seems to be lacking.
