The Gates, Final

I finally got to see the Gates on the last day they were to be displayed in Central Park. It was an interesting site to say the least. Many people were out strolling under the gates for one last look. After my debate with it's value in a previous post, it occurred to me that there is value in the attraction it has brought to New York, for city image, for tourism, and just plain publicity. Most of all it's got people questioning art and that is never a bad thing. I still debate over it's value being equal to it's price tag but there is worth in the many orange monoliths covering the park.
Update: New Gallery of The Gates Photos.

"I want to thank Warner Brothers for casting me in this piece of shit."
Dumbest Idea Ever
Just what makes that little ole ant, think he can move a planetary mass in a stable elliptical orbit around the sun?
Hootie and the King
Have you seen the Burger King advert with Hootie (sans the Blowfish) in it? He's singing a little country diddy while farm girls all dance around eating burgers and looking hot.
Chicks and Burgers and Hootie, Has all the right things to make me like it but instead it just really creeps me out.
The Gates Part 2; Form vs. Function
I am back in NYC and I plan on going to see The Gates project by Christo this weekend in Central Park. I'll take plenty of pictures of it all but some questions come to mind while on the plane coming back.
The Gates cost is a bit over $20 million dollars and privately funded (except the cost of security and cleanup in the park by the city). So why is it everyone is outraged when George Bush wants to drill on a reserve in Alaska for oil but people starve in the world while we put orange drapes all over Central park?
I'm over simplifying this I know, but it's still a question worth asking. I like art and I am all for bringing attention to art awareness and getting people to think outside the norms of reality, but good art doesn't have to cost over $20 million dollars and at some point the value of art should be measured against a social consciousness.
Thanks to greg.org, Someone has attempted to do some third party accounting on the project to see if it all adds up. By his accounting, we're still missing about $18million and some change.
All of this aside, I will let you know my opinion of the Gates this weekend when I get to see them first hand.
New York Bound
Heading back to the world's second home tomorrow (formerly known as the big apple). Thanks to a visit to the doctor, I can breath this time when I go back. I am sold on the Advair Disc.
Kottke is now a full time blogger. Congrats on the career change but I wonder how his site is going to change. I mean, I thought he already was a full time blogger.
Dallas, Texas
The Colorado trip didn't turn out the way it was meant to go so in a last min salvage effort, the car was turned south again all the way to Dallas.
I want to say that the Dallas I have memories of no longer is there. West End was a large disapointment, the people were missing except the beggers that seemed to be everywhere wanting some change. I mean more than you see on a given day in Manhattan. All the places that were hot spots were now dead or dying. Great big ball of disapointment Dallas was.
Also, during the trip I kept count of the patriotic and religious ribbons on cars. I am up to 181 Since Feb 13.
Somewhere on the road at a hotel
I am tired of driving. It's cold and I am still sick.
Stay tuned for further exciting updates.
Happy Valentine's day
I went to the doctor today. It seems the reason I have been so asthmetic since Christmas and over all feeling like poop is because I have a bit of a lung infection. I caught a bug and it just has not gone away. My appologies to all those whom I have licked on the nose last month. It was the booze anyway.
Oh and I now have the flu on top of that now so yeah for me.
I got the meds and hopefully that will patch me up over the next few days on the drive to Colorado.
(cough)
Dragostea Din Tei
Sometimes life gets hard in between the hours of playing World of Warcraft and gman from New Jersey just needed to let all that aggression out. Three months ago he uploaded this clip of himself singing Dragostea Din Tei by OZone to a single newsgroup and now he's famous.
No, not internet famous; really famous. like on Television and stuff.
The Gates (coming soon)
I think I am the only resident of New York that has a blog and doesn't have picts of The Gates up yet. Well good news kids, the camera is fixed and I return to NYC in time to go see it and add my collection of photos to the masses.
In the meantime, you can look at these and these and many others out there to enjoy.
Happy 8th Birthday Nate
My little boy is eight years old today! There are many birthdays but only one eighth birthday. He has his own dental floss and everything!
Yea, I don't understand either but since I have been here, he's showed off his dental floss he carries around several times.
Sothwest Airlines (or ATA actually) lost my luggage last night. As if three and a half hours wasn't enough time to get my luggage over to the right plane. Nate kept telling me he was sorry about it. Which tends to make you care a little less about your luggage missing and admire the big heart on the kid.
It's his birthday but I really needed the hug.
Layover
Going to be living in an airport terminal on wednesday. If you want to send a text message to help me pass the time you can email a short text (70 char max) to my phone with some love, interesting news, or even a thought provoking Haiku. Or you can just say hi.
Today
Today is one of those days that makes you want to kick something. or burn a small cat. It's about the same on the karma scale.
stupid cats.
Oklahoma Again
Heading to Oklahoma tomorrow. Nate's 8th birthday is this week and I plan on getting some good kid time in. Not looking forward to the flight though. I have two layovers and I'm still leary of seeing airports since just traveling back from London.
A road trip is on the schedule as well. It will be nice to get on the open road again and get some fresh air in the lungs.
Camera Broken
My camera is broken. :(
Sideways
The plane is endlessly delayed on the runway thanks to a jumbo jet in front that broke down. So I thought I would blog from my palm phone.
I was really wanting to see the movie Sideways and thanks to this flight, I have. What an absolute horrible, irritating movie. three different times I looked for something else to do but hoped the movie would get better. The reviewers lied. This movie is not perfect nor even funny as led to believe. I think a few anxious critics who wanted to the first to discover this hidden gem independent movie got carried away on their reviews.
If you really enjoyed this movie, then the terrorists have already won.
Boring dribble from Heathrow Airport
Sadly the trip to London comes to a close. Mostly sad becasue it's a warmer 48 degrees here in London and still only 22 degrees in NYC. Arriving at Heathrow Airport about three hours early tends to make you want to drink, Australian beer is even on the menu.
The plans on traveling Europe have changed a little in the following months. Now the trip may also include Vienna, Budapest, and Bratislava. I know where 2 out of 3 of these places are on a map but will find the last one soon enough.
I have missed being the only person who sounds like me. There is a bit of an warm fuzzy arrogance in being simply unique amoung a group of people but then again, it's not as if I sound like anyone in New York either.
My breathing is getting worse. Asthma attacks that have been just mostly bothersome in my adult life are now becoming more intense. I am going to see a Dr. soon and find out what that is all about.
